What is ‘World Immunization week’ ?
Every year ‘Last week’ of April is celebrated as World Immunization Week to promote the use of vaccines to protect the people against diseases. This saves millions of people’s lives every year.
What are vaccines ?
Vaccines are either live (but inactive) organisms, Dead organisms or products developed from them.
How are vaccines administered ?
Vaccines can be administered either via oral or injectable route. Injectable route can be intradermal(BCG), Subcutaneous(Rabies) or Intramuscular(Hepatitis B). Polio vaccine is administered via Oral route.
What is the purpose of vaccination ?
Vaccines are capable of stimulating a person’s immune system. So the person’s body develops special sets of protecting cells & antibodies to fight against bacteria or viruses for which the vaccine is introduced.
What is the role of vaccination in Cancer ?
- It is good that few cancers can be prevented by vaccines. Cervical cancer is one such cancer.
- It is very important to know about cervical cancer because it is the second most common cancer in Indian females. It’s rate is very low in other countries as they follow the vaccination and screening guidelines.
- Twenty seven percent of cervical cancer patients of the world are Indian patients. One Indian woman dies of cervical cancer every eight minutes.
- The figures are worrisome and something concrete has to be done.
- Cervical cancer is caused by HPV vaccine. This infection can be prevented by the vaccines available.
- Two doses prevent the infection in 95% of cases if taken at adequate time.
- The vaccine should be given to girls between 12 to 19 years of age.
